A HUGE extension to the Belfry which will see a new water park for hotel guests created has been given the green light by planning chiefs.

Members of North Warwickshire Borough Council's planning board have approved proposals to expand the site's number of rooms, build a luxury spa as well as creating a new conference facility.

After visiting the site, area leaders were impressed with the set-up and location and gave the plans to go ahead.

Councillor Peter Morson, member of the planning committee, said: "I think this is an excellent application and will bring the Belfry back to being a five-star hotel and resort.

"When we went on the site visit, the staff explained everything to us in great detail and we were also really impressed with the high amount of surveys they did with local people.

"If you can get residents on your side that is half the battle and they went to great lengths to ensure they did this.

"I am actually really excited about this development, I think it is going to be even better than Centre Parcs and be the jewel in the crown for North Warwickshire."

The proposals involve converting the existing Bel Air nightclub into a new state-of-the-art spa.

The planned water park will be designed by the same company that created Alton Towers' Splash Landings.

They also include a new indoor, self-contained water entertainment area, specifically designed for the hotel's residents, and a luxury spa facility.

The new indoor waterpark will designed by 'internationally renowned' water park designer WTI, which has designed numerous water parks in the US, Europe and Australia.

There are plans for an additional 112 hotel bedrooms, up from the present 320 rooms, with 40 of those rooms directly connected to the new spa.

The new conference facility will be able to hold 700 guests for banqueting and ballroom functions.

The proposals had been deferred while the members held a visit of the site, but since that meeting the planning chiefs were impressed with the location and application and gave it the go ahead.

Councillor John Smitten, who also sits on the North Warwickshire Planning Board, was pleased to see the plans go through.

He said: "We have a world class, world renowned resort here and now is the chance for us to improve it even more and prepare it for the future.

"I think it is going to look fantastic when it is all done and I was very pleased to put the application through.

"They have worked hard to showcase it in the community and it will bring jobs and investment into the area."
