FIVE “terrified” and “trembling” kittens and their mother were dumped and abandoned outside a Tamworth boarding kennels last week.
A large cardboard box containing the kittens and an old dressing gown was left outside Alvec House Boarding Kennels on Wednesday, August 27.
Just 24 hours later a certain ‘A.Smith’ left a note on a cat carrier which contained the kittens’ mother, Molly, outside the same premises on Shuttington Road.
Owner of the kennels, Lesley Stratford, said: “The large box of kittens was just left inside the gates last Wednesday (August 27). They were terrified and trembling – really frightened. The person who dropped them off wrapped them up in an old dressing gown so he or she knew what they were doing.
“We close between 12pm and 2pm so the box was dropped off around that time. We had no choice but to take them in. We tended to them and kept them together.”
Quite remarkably a day later the same person dropped off their mother in a cat carrier. The note said ‘I dropped the kittens off yesterday and their mommy was crying. Perhaps you can help’.
And Lesley said the mother – a tabby cat – was in a bad way. She said: “A day later (August 28) one of the workers, Patrick, came back from his lunch and seen a cat carrier inside of our gates.
"The she-cat looked terrible due to the build-up of milk. That’s when I knew it was the kittens’ mother. We left it a while until we reunited her with her kittens as we wanted to calm her down.
"There was no interest between them to start with so I left them a while. On the evening, however, three of the kittens got inside the box with her and by the end all five of them were cuddling up and taking her milk. It was a brilliant site.”
Lesley added: “We are a dog and cattery kennels but we don’t take on rescues so it was a cowardly way to go about it if you ask me. However, the person could have put them all in the sack with a brick and drowned them so in that respect I’m glad they are with us.”
Asked how the six of them are doing, Lesley said: “Very well. The kittens are playing how they should be – they’re really playful. We’ve been cautious when handling them because they are still a bit timid. Mommy is gorgeous and has a beautiful temperament.
“I’d like to appeal to any readers to come and give the kittens and their mother a home. Call me or come and see them.”
