A TAMWORTH four-year-old who threw a message in a bottle into the English channel has received a reply – from more than 10,000 miles away in Australia.

Little Jasmine Hudson was on a holiday in Bournemouth with her family in April and threw the sealed glass bottle into the sea from the town’s pier.

And last week the family, who live in Wilnecote, received a card through the post from a woman who lives in Adelaide, South Austraila.

“We cannot believe how far it has travelled,” mum Louise told the Herald this week.

“We were hoping someone would find it – Jasmine’s aunt lives in Guernsey, so we said we would see if we could get the bottle to float there.

“But as the months went on we gradually forgot about it.”

Jasmine’s grandparents bought the ‘message in a bottle kit’ and the four-year-old put her name and address inside the bottle, along with the date and where it was thrown into the sea.

It is believed the bottle could have floated along the Atlantic Ocean, south of Africa and through the Indian Ocean to arrive in Australia.

And it took just five months to travel the mammoth journey.

The card, received through the post last Thursday, was from grandmother Barbara Richards.

She said she was walking along Largs Bay Beach with her brother when she found the bottle – and said she was “so excited” to find the message.

She says the pair had been “introduced by fate”.

Louise said: “It was so nice that someone found it and wrote to us.

“Jasmine does not really grasp the distance involved, but she is quite excited to write a letter back.”

And Jasmine is also now planning to start chatting to her new friend on Skype.

Jasmine said: “I was really excited when I got a letter from Australia.

“I had forgotten that I had thrown the message in the sea. I thought it might have been eaten by a shark.”
