A WOMAN has been fined for wasting police time after her report of a sexual assault in Tamworth turned out to be false.

Hundreds of residents took to social media sites on Saturday (October 5) to express their concern after access to Belgrave Lakes off Marlborough Way was closed by officers late on Friday night.

Cyclist Mark Green was travelling home from Dosthill when he came across the scene.

"I cycled past the side entrance to Belgrave School straight on up to Marlborough Way and you couldn't go straight on, that was taped off with a policeman standing there," said Mark.

"I went a different way and saw even more police cars, they were everywhere."

A police spokesman explained: "Following a detailed police investigation in which officers worked closely with the woman who made the initial allegation, it has now been determined a false report was made.

"The woman concerned will be dealt with appropriately for wasting police time.

"Staffordshire Police will thoroughly investigate all such reports of this type of crime and victims are encouraged to report it by calling 101."

Two men were arrested on Saturday after the allegation and a detailed examination was made at the scene but they were released without charge.
