A FLYING start by entrants for the Herald-backed Great Midlands Fun Run has seen over 1,000 register in the first five days.
Kind-hearted runners looking to pound the streets and park in Sutton this June and raise thousands for a host of good causes have snapped up the first few places in record time.
Over ten per cent of the 7,000 places went in three days, with 350 places going in the first 12 hours online. Among the early starters 93 per cent of places have been taken by adults, six per cent by juniors and the remainder secured by 13 dedicated dogs.
Clive Hemus – a regular Fun Run entrant and member of Streetly ACC, was the first individual to register at the Our Place Community Hub last Saturday.
Among the early teams to make a fast start were last year's Fund-raising Team of the Year – Team Zeemon, which runs in memory of Simon Fenn who died from pancreatic cancer, has secured 11 places, followed by Fun Run stalwarts the Sutton Leprechauns and Streetly Academy both with six signed up already.
Team MGA running for the Myasthenia Gravis Association, a charity which helps those suffering from the severe muscle weakening condition was also quick off the mark.
Among the charities to receive support in the opening week for registration are Cancer Research UK, the George Coller Memorial Fund and Ronald McDonald House.
Anyone looking to register and secure their place in this year's event, which takes place on Sunday, June 2 around the 8.5 mile course has one week less to do so this year.
Registration will close on Friday, March 22 or when 7,000 entrants have been received, (whichever comes sooner) and Fun Run event director, Tracey Spare is urging people to sign up soon or risk missing out.
"It's the best response we have ever had for entries in the first week," Tracey said. "People have only got seven weeks to register this year, one less than in previous years and the early indications are we will have a full house again for the fourth year running.
"There will be well over 1,000 signed up in the first week and expect big teams from Streetly Academy, Sutton Girls, Arthur Terry and Plantsbrook schools.
"If you want to do the Fun Run "enter today and don't delay" as we say every year. I am encouraging people to register as soon as possible and then get as many sponsors as they can to help their chosen organisation.
"That's what this event is about - having a good time and raising money."
