An early weather warning has been issued as heavy snow looks set to hit Tamworth this weekend.

The Met Office has warned of a snowy end to the weekend, saying that up to 10cm of the white stuff could fall on Sunday.

Rain is set to hit the cold air and give snow for many - especially to the Midlands.

Tamworth is under a yellow weather alert, with forecasters also warning of disruption to travel.

But there is uncertainty as to the extent of the wintry weather.

Eddy Carroll, Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: "Even at this short timescale there is currently a lot of uncertainty about the extent of the rain, sleet and snow later this weekend.

"People should stay up-to-date with the latest forecasts and warnings and be prepared for some disruption to travel."

The Highways Agency are also urging residents to be prepared for the bad weather.

Long-range forecasts show that a cold, frosty and icy start is expected on Monday.

Steve Crosthwaite, head of the Highways Agency's National Traffic Operations Centre, said: "Anyone setting off on Saturday for a weekend away perhaps should be prepared for more difficult conditions on the way home and commuters would be well-advised to check Sunday evening and be prepared to allow extra time for their journey to work on Monday morning.

"We have been working solidly throughout the winter to treat our network. Our 500-strong fleet of snowploughs and gritters, plus our traffic officer patrols, will be doing everything they can to keep traffic moving."

Conditions are set to improve into next week, but it will remain cold, warn forecasters.
